You see an odds drop from 2.40 to 2.10 in twenty minutes. Does that mean someone knows something?
Maybe. Or maybe it means exactly the opposite. The price alone won't tell you which one.
Why prices move
A sharp book moves a price for two very different reasons. The first is information: money came in that the book respects, or something changed in the game, and the estimate was revised. The second is exposure: heavy money came in on one side and the book needs to balance risk, regardless of whether it thinks that side is right.
From the outside, both cases look the same. The odds drop either way.
The limit is the tiebreaker
The maximum bet limit is the missing piece. When a book lowers the price and at the same time increases what it's willing to accept, it's saying it believes in the new number: it wants more volume at that price. That's conviction.
When the price drops and the limit drops with it, the reading changes completely. The book is reducing exposure, not buying the new estimate. Often it's just public money piling up on one side.
Time matters too
An 8% move spread over six hours is one thing; the same 8% in four minutes is another. Sharp moves usually correspond to new information entering the market — a roster announcement, an injury, a big bet from someone the book takes seriously.
Slow, continuous moves are more often normal adjustment as the game approaches and uncertainty decreases.
Reading three things at once
Price, limit, and time. A sharp move with limit rising, in a market that accepts large volume, is the strongest signal you'll find. A slow move with limit dropping, in a low-limit market, is probably noise.
Most bettors look only at the price. That's why most bettors read movements wrong.
